A beautifully restored radiator deserves fittings to match. Valves control how a room heats, wall stays keep everything secure once it’s back on the wall, and the right pipe kit finishes the job neatly. A short guide to help you choose with confidence.

Valves: Manual vs TRV

Every radiator needs a valve to control the flow of hot water into it. A manual valve is simple and traditional — you set it by hand and it holds that setting, a classic look that suits a period room. A thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) senses room temperature and adjusts the flow automatically, so each radiator can be set independently. One rule worth knowing: TRVs aren’t usually recommended in rooms with a wall thermostat, since the two would end up trying to control the same room’s temperature at once. In that case, a manual valve is the better match.

Wall stays

Wall stays anchor a radiator securely to the wall, taking the strain off the pipework beneath it — particularly important with cast iron, given the weight involved. As a general rule, a radiator with an odd number of sections uses a single central stay, while longer runs are supported at more than one point. The right choice depends on your wall type and how the radiator is plumbed in, so it’s worth checking before you fit.

Pipe kits & finishing touches

A pipe kit connects the radiator to your central heating system and, done well, disappears into the room rather than drawing the eye. Kits typically pair the valve with matching pipework and a floor or wall cover plate, finished to complement cast iron’s traditional lines. Getting the kit right at the same time as the radiator keeps the whole installation looking considered, not bolted together.

Will your cast iron radiator valves fit my radiator?

Our cast iron radiator valves suit the ½” BSP bottom bushes our radiators are supplied with. If you have an older radiator with different fittings, get in touch and we’ll check before you order.

Can I buy accessories without buying a radiator?

Yes. Every accessory can be ordered on its own — you don’t need to buy a radiator from us.

What finishes do the valves come in?

Each product page lists the finishes it comes in. Many of our cast iron radiator valves are available in several traditional finishes, so you can match your radiator and pipework.

Can I use a TRV on every radiator?

Usually, yes — except in the room with your wall thermostat. There, a manual valve is the better match, so the two controls don’t end up competing for the same room.

What is a lockshield valve?

A lockshield is the valve on the other end of the radiator. It’s set once, usually when the heating system is balanced, and then left alone so each radiator gets its fair share of hot water.

What does a bleed valve do?

Air collects at the top of a radiator over time and leaves it cold at the top. A bleed valve lets you release that air with a radiator key, so the radiator heats evenly again.

How are accessories delivered?

Accessories are small enough to post, so they’re sent by Royal Mail.
