Valves: manual vs TRV
Every radiator needs a valve to control the flow of hot water into it. A manual valve is simple and traditional — you set it by hand and it holds that setting, a classic look that suits a period room. A thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) senses room temperature and adjusts the flow automatically, so each radiator can be set independently. One rule worth knowing: TRVs aren’t usually recommended in rooms with a wall thermostat, since the two would end up trying to control the same room’s temperature at once. In that case, a manual valve is the better match.
Wall stays
Wall stays anchor a radiator securely to the wall, taking the strain off the pipework beneath it — particularly important with cast iron, given the weight involved. As a general rule, a radiator with an odd number of sections uses a single central stay, while longer runs are supported at more than one point. The right choice depends on your wall type and how the radiator is plumbed in, so it’s worth checking before you fit.
Pipe kits & finishing touches
A pipe kit connects the radiator to your central heating system and, done well, disappears into the room rather than drawing the eye. Kits typically pair the valve with matching pipework and a floor or wall cover plate, finished to complement cast iron’s traditional lines. Getting the kit right at the same time as the radiator keeps the whole installation looking considered, not bolted together.
