Our cast iron radiator restoration process

Restored Victorian four-column cast iron radiator — column detail

    Old fittings replaced

We remove the old fittings and fit new ½” BSP bushes, ready for modern heating systems and thermostatic valves. Matching valves and accessories are available too.

Cast iron radiator being blasted back to bare iron in the Radrestore workshop

    Shot-blasted, never dipped

Paint, rust and corrosion are removed in our in-house iron shot-blaster — never caustic tanks or acid dipping. Cleaner, greener and no chemical residue left behind.

Restored cast iron radiator internally flushed and pressure tested in the Radrestore workshop

    Flushed & pressure-tested

The internals are flushed and cleaned of years of sludge for better efficiency, then every radiator is pressure-tested to 4 bar so any weak points are found and repaired before it leaves us.

Restored cast iron radiator being hand-finished in the Radrestore workshop

    Finished in your colour

Your chosen finish is applied in-house — the three Classic colours, any Signature or designer shade, or a hand-polished bare-metal look — then checked and photographed before it leaves the workshop.

Watch it happen — track your restoration online

From the moment your radiators reach the workshop, your private tracking page shows live progress station by station, your estimated completion date, and — before anything comes back to you — photos of the finished radiators. It's the same system our workshop actually runs on, so what you see is what's happening on the floor. We email your private tracking link as soon as your order reaches the workshop — lost it? Call 0161 843 8163 or email [email protected] with your order number and we'll resend it.

Leaking or damaged cast iron radiator? We repair them

A leak, a cracked section or rust breaking through the casting doesn’t mean the end of a cast iron radiator — it means it needs a workshop, not a skip. Every restoration is pressure-tested to 4 bar, which finds the weak points; we repair or replace damaged sections and renew gaskets and seals, and larger jobs such as replacement legs are quoted individually. Repairs typically add up to £10 per section, charged across the whole of the affected radiator, confirmed once we’ve seen your photos. Start with the estimator above, attach a photo of the damage, and we’ll confirm what’s possible and give you a firm price.

    Restoration FAQs

How much does it cost to restore a cast iron radiator?

Restoration costs from £150 including VAT. The price is £30 per section inc VAT (minimum five sections), plus your chosen finish: Classic is included, Signature +£10, a Custom colour (any RAL reference or a named designer shade — Little Greene, Farrow & Ball, Paint & Paper Library and the other houses we stock) +£15, and Bespoke metallic or polished finishes +£20 per section. Radiators over 25 sections get a bespoke quote by phone or WhatsApp. Use the online estimator for an instant guide, then send photos for a firm price.

Do you use acid or caustic dipping to strip the paint?

No. We strip every radiator with our in-house iron shot-blaster. There’s no caustic tank, no acid dip and no days-long chemical soak — it’s cleaner, greener and leaves no residue.

    Is my restored radiator guaranteed?

Yes — every restoration is pressure-tested to 4 bar and backed by our 25-year Cast Iron Guarantee.

Will a restored radiator work with modern heating and thermostatic valves?

Yes. We fit new ½” BSP bushes as standard, so your radiator is ready for modern systems and TRVs, and is compatible with heat pumps and condensing boilers. Not sure what heat output you need? Try our BTU calculator.

Can you repair leaks or damaged sections?

Yes. Pressure testing finds any weak points, and we repair or replace damaged sections and gaskets as required. Repairs typically add up to £10 per section, charged across the whole of the affected radiator, and larger jobs such as replacement legs are quoted individually — send photos with your quote request and we’ll confirm the exact price.

    What finishes can I choose?

Classic (Black, White or Grey) is included. Signature (+£10 per section) covers our curated collection of over 20 colours. A Custom colour — any RAL reference or a named designer shade (Little Greene, Farrow & Ball, Paint & Paper Library and the other houses we stock) — is +£15 per section. Bespoke (+£20 per section) is our metallic and specialist hand-polished range. Browse the full collection on our finishes page.

Do you collect and deliver cast iron radiators?

Yes — we offer collection and delivery UK-wide, or you’re welcome to bring radiators to our workshop in Reddish, Stockport, Greater Manchester.

    How long does restoration take?

We aim to complete every restoration within four to six weeks, and we give you an estimated completion date as soon as your radiators start their journey through the workshop. Where extra work is needed — structural repairs, for example — it can take a little longer, and we’ll always tell you up front. You’re never left wondering — every job comes with a private tracking page so you can watch your radiators move through the workshop station by station.
