How are cast iron radiators restored? The honest answer is: in stages, by hand, and with a pressure gauge involved long before any paint goes near the iron. Every radiator that arrives at our workshop in Reddish, Stockport follows the same journey — whether it’s collected from the other end of the country or dropped off at the door. Here’s what actually happens between arrival and delivery.
How are cast iron radiators restored, step by step?
Each radiator moves through the workshop station by station:
- Stripped — blasted back to bare iron in our in-house shot-blaster
- Repaired and tested — internals flushed, then pressure-tested to 4 bar
- Finished — your chosen colour or polish, applied in-house
- Cured and checked — photographed before it leaves the workshop
It’s the same process behind every job on our radiator restoration page. Below is what each stage involves, and why we do it the way we do.
Stripped back to bare iron
A century-old radiator usually arrives wearing every colour it’s ever been painted, with rust and corrosion underneath. All of it comes off in our in-house iron shot-blaster, which strips the radiator back to clean, bare metal. We never use caustic tanks or acid dipping — there’s no days-long chemical soak and no residue left behind, and it’s a cleaner, greener way to work.
Blasting also tells us the truth about a radiator. With the layers gone, we can see the casting properly — including any cracks or old repairs that were hiding under the paint.
Repairs and pressure testing
Next, the internals are flushed and cleaned of years of accumulated sludge — a restored radiator has to heat properly as well as look right. Then every radiator is pressure-tested to 4 bar. The test finds the weak points, and where it does, we repair or replace damaged sections and renew gaskets and seals before going any further.
This is also where the old fittings come off. We fit new ½” BSP bushes as standard, so your restored radiator is ready for modern heating systems and thermostatic valves — and compatible with heat pumps and condensing boilers. If a repair means the job will take longer than planned, we tell you straight away rather than letting the date slip quietly.
Finished in your chosen colour
With the iron sound and tested, the finish you chose is applied in-house. That could be one of the three Classic colours — Black, White or Grey — a shade from our Signature collection of more than twenty colours, a Custom colour (any RAL reference, or a named designer shade from the paint houses we stock, such as Little Greene, Farrow & Ball and Paint & Paper Library), or a Bespoke metallic or hand-polished bare-metal look. Polished radiators are sealed with a clear etch primer and a protective anti-yellowing lacquer, so the shine is protected from day one. Curing, checks and photographs
Paint needs time to cure properly, so once the finish is on, the radiator sits while it hardens. This is when we check it over and photograph it — the finished photos go up on your tracking page before anything is wrapped for the return journey, so you see exactly what’s coming back to you. Watch it happen: your tracking page and completion date
From the moment your radiators reach the workshop, you’ll have a private tracking page showing live progress station by station. It’s the same system our workshop actually runs on, so what you see is what’s happening on the floor.
The tracking page also carries your estimated completion date. We aim to complete every restoration within four to six weeks, and you get that date as soon as your radiators start their journey through the workshop. Where extra work is needed — structural repairs, for example — it can take a little longer, and we’ll always tell you up front. Clear communication is one of the four commitments in our promise, and the tracking page is how we keep it, job after job.
